Bennie Thompson is in his second season assisting special teams’ coach Russ Purnell. One of the game’s best-ever special teams’ performers for 11 NFL seasons (1989-99) and three CFL seasons (1986-88), Bennie was a voted to two Pro Bowls as special teams’ performer, in 1998 and 1991.
Thompson joined the Ravens’ coaching staff last August after his stellar playing career. He totalled an amazing 197 career special teams’ stops, 149 tackles in the secondary, six QB sacks and seven interceptions. He played for the Modell franchise from 1994 through 1999, the Kansas City Chiefs from 1992-93, and the New Orleans Saints from 1989-91. Bennie played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1986-88 after being released by the Chiefs as a rookie free agent in 1985.
Thompson was a team captain and team MVP as a senior at Grambling, where he started for two seasons. He attended John McDonough High School in New Orleans, where he was a two-time All-State linebacker. Bennie lives in Pikesville, MD.
